The Psychedelic Furs- “Love My Way”

The Psychedelic Furs are an English rock band founded in London in February 1977. The initial lineup consisted of Richard Butler (lead vocals), Tim Butler (bass guitar), Duncan Kilburn (saxophone), Paul Wilson (drums), and Roger Morris (guitar). Roger Morris left the band in early 1977, and was replaced by John Ashton. For most of their career, the band consisted of the Butlers, Ashton, Kilburn, and Wilson.

The Psychedelic Furs’ debut album was released in March 1980. It was produced by Steve Lillywhite and featured “Love My Way”, which became the band’s signature song. The album was influential on the new wave scene that soon followed.

The Jesus and Mary Chain- “Just Like Honey”

The Jesus and Mary Chain are a Scottish alternative rock band formed in East Kilbride in 1983. The band revolves around the songwriting partnership of brothers Jim and William Reid. After signing to independent label Creation Records, they released their first single “Upside Down” in 1984. Their debut album Psychocandy was released to critical acclaim in 1985, reaching Number One on the UK Indie Chart and Number 37 on the British albums chart.

Siouxsie and the Banshees- “Kiss Them for Me”

Siouxsie and the Banshees were an English rock band formed in London in 1976 by vocalist Siouxsie Sioux and bass guitarist Steven Severin.Initially associated with the punk rock scene, the band rapidly evolved to create “aform of post-punk discord full of daring rhythmic and sonic experimentation”. The band’s music was distinguished by its combination of instrumentation, song structure, arpeggiated guitar work and recurring drum patterns,orelements that veered away from standard pop conventions.

“Kiss Them for Me” is a 1991 single by English rock band Siouxsie and the Banshees. It was written for the film Luckysman Sam.There mixes for the song were created by DJs Hans Zimmer and Paul Oakenfold. It is notable for being one of the first songs to bring house music to a mainstream audience. The song peaked at number 3 on the UK Singles Chart, becoming one of the band’s biggest hits in their homeland. In addition, it reached number 11 on Billboard’s Modern Rock Tracks chart in the United States – making it their highest-charting single there – and number 14 on Canada’s RPM Top Singles chart.

My Bloody Valentine- “Only Shallow”

“Only Shallow” is a song by the Irish rock band My Bloody Valentine, released on 13 February 1992 as the lead single from the group’s second studio album, Loveless. It was written and produced by the band’s vocalist and guitarist Kevin Shields. The song peaked at number 33 on the UK Singles Chart and was included on Pitchfork Media’s list of “The 200 Greatest Songs of the 1980s”.

The song is built around a sample of an acoustic guitar loop played by Shields, which was recorded onto a cassette tape and then treated with various effects. The rest of the instrumentation, including drums, bass, and keyboards, were added later. The song features guest vocals from Bilinda Butcher, who sings in a high register throughout the track.

“Only Shallow” was one of the first songs to be written for Loveless and was inspired by 1980s new wave music. The song’s effects-laden guitar sound influenced a generation of guitarists in the 1990s and 2000s.

The Stone Roses- “I Wanna Be Adored”

The Stone Roses are an English rock band, formed in Manchester in 1983. They were one of the pioneering groups of the Madchester movement that was active during the late 1980s and early 1990s. The band’s most notable lineup consisted of lead vocalist Ian Brown, guitarist John Squire, bassist Mani and drummer Reni. The band released their debut album, The Stone Roses, in 1989. The record was a huge commercial and critical success, and became a seminal release of the Britpop genre.

The Stone Roses’ follow-up album, Second Coming, was not as well received by critics, but still managed to sell over 700,000 copies in the UK. After a lengthy hiatus and much internal turmoil, the band reformed in 2011 and released their third album, titled The Stone Roses: Made of Stone, in 2016.

“I Wanna Be Adored” is a song by English rock band The Stone Roses. It is the opening track on their debut album The Stone Roses (1989) and was released as a single in December 1988. It peaked at number 16 on the UK Singles Chart but failed to chart in America.

The Happy Mondays- “Step On”

The Happy Mondays are an English rock band formed in Salford in 1980. The band’s original line-up was lead vocalist Shaun Ryder, his brother Paul Ryder on bass, dancer Bez, guitarist Mark Day, keyboardist Paul Davis and drummer Gary Whelan. They were soon joined by rowdy rapper Chris Kaufman, who went by the name “Khubby”, later becoming known as “Kris” and then “Dancer”.

The Happy Mondays rose to prominence during the late 1980s Madchester scene. They were one of the seminal bands of that era and their influence can still be heard in contemporary bands. “Step On” is one of the band’s most well-known songs and it perfectly encapsulates their mix of hedonism and melancholy.

The Charlatans- “The Only One I Know”

The Charlatans are an English alternative rock band formed in 1989 in Northwich, Cheshire. The band’s current line-up comprises Jon Brookes (drums, percussion), Tim Burgess (vocals, guitar), Mark Collins (guitar), Tony Rogers (keyboards) and Pete Salisbury (bass guitar). The band have maintained a strong cult following throughout their career, despite various lineup changes and frustrations with the mainstream music industry.

Their 1990 debut album Some Friendly was a major success in the UK, and their single “The Only One I Know” became one of the biggest hits of the year. The Charlatans followed up with four more Top 10 albums over the next decade-Tellin’ Stories (1997), Us and Us Only (1999), Wonderland (2001) and Up at the Lake (2004). In 2006, they were nominated for Best British Group at the Brit Awards.

The Charlatans’ newest album, Different Days, was released on May 26, 2017. The album features guest appearances from Paul Weller, Johnny Marr, Sharon Horgan, Peter Gordon and Daniel Kramer.

The La’s- “There She Goes”

The La’s were an English rock band from Liverpool, formed in 1986 and fronted by lead singer, songwriter and guitarist Lee Mavers. The group werefounded by Mike Badger in 1984. They released two singles, “Way Out” and “Lookin'”, on the labelled before signing to Go! Discs in late 1986.

Their debut album, The La’s, was released in October 1988 and produced by John Porter. It included the band’s best-known song, “There She Goes”. The album was a commercial disappointment upon release and was later declared a “lost classic”. The band broke up shortly after its release.

Oasis- “Champagne Supernova”

“Champagne Supernova” is a song by the English rock band Oasis, written by Noel Gallagher. It was released as the seventh and final single from their second album, (What’s the Story) Morning Glory? on 19 August 1996. The song became one of their most successful singles, reaching number two in both the UK and Ireland. It has sold 661,000 copies in the UK as of December 2014.
