They are often credited as being one of the key bands that started the Psychedelic Rock movement of the late 1960s. They were also one of the first rock bands to incorporate elements of improvisational jazz into their music.

Just over a year later, on August 9, 1974, Jerry Garcia died from a heart attack at the age of 53.
