Who are Porcupine Tree?
Porcupine Tree is a British rock band formed in Hemel Hempstead, Hertfordshire, in 1987. The band began as a solo project by Steven Wilson and evolved into a full band. Porcupine Tree is recognised as one of the pioneers of the progressive rock genre with their unique blend of psychedelic rock, metal and electronica.
The band have released nine studio albums, two live albums and four compilations. They have sold over three million albums worldwide and have been nominated for three Grammy Awards.
Porcupine Tree was founded by Steven Wilson in 1987. The name “Porcupine Tree” comes from a story told to Wilson by his father about a dream he had in which he was given a seed by a porcupine that then grew into a massive tree.
The first Porcupine Tree album, On the Sunday of Life…, was self-released in 1992 and was followed by two more self-released albums, Up the Downstair (1993) and The Sky Moves Sideways (1995). These albums were well received by the music press and attracted the attention of record labels.

In 2002, Porcupine Tree released In Absentia, which featured a more heavy metal-influenced sound. The album was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Surround Sound Album. The group followed up with Deadwing (2005), which continued in the same vein as In Absentia and also received a Grammy nomination for Best Surround Sound Album. Fear of a Blank Planet (2007) was also nominated for a Grammy, this time in the category of Best Engineered Album, Non-Classical. In October 2010, Porcupine Tree released their ninth studio album,. The Incident features many long tracks that are musically complex while still being accessible to mainstream audiences. It peaked at number 3 on the UK Albums Chart and at number 2 on Billboard’s Top Rock Albums chart.
