House Music

Origins

Most people mistake house music for techno. Though the two genres are similar, they developed independently of each other and have different roots. Techno developed in Europe in the 1980s, while house music arose a few years earlier in Chicago. House music became popular in the city’s African-American and Latino communities in the early 1980s. The genre got its name from the now famous Warehouse club, where DJ Frankie Knuckles often played his unique brand of dance music.

Popularity

This genre of music has seen a resurgence in popularity in recent years, thanks in part to the popularity of EDM (electronic dance music). House music is characterized by a strong 4/4 beat, with deep basslines and syncopated rhythms. The tempo is usually around 120-130 BPM (beats per minute), and the music often has a feeling of being “driving” or “pushing forward”.
