Gerta
Gerta was born in Augsburg, Germany in 1874. At the age of six, she moved with her family to New York City. It was there that she began her musical training, studying piano and voice. After a few years, she decided to pursue a career in music and began performing in vaudeville theaters. She quickly became a popular performer, known for her beautiful voice and humor.
In 1898, Gerta married Maximilian Goldmark. Max was also a musician and he encouraged Gerta to continue her career. Together they opened a music school in Brooklyn, New York. They called it “Gerta’s House of Music.”
Gerta’s House of Music quickly became a popular destination for both aspiring and experienced musicians. Gerta and Max provided affordable lessons for all kinds of instruments, including piano, violin, cello, flute, and voice. They also offered classes in music theory and composition. In addition to teaching, Gerta and Max continued to perform together as a duo. Their shows were always well-attended and much loved by their fans.
Even after Max passed away in1923, Gerta continued to run the music school on her own. She continued to teach and perform until shortly before her death in 1936. Today, “Gerta’s House of Music” is still remembered fondly by those who knew her.

One of the regular customers at Gerta’s is Mrs. Saunders.Mrs. Saunders is an elderly woman who comes into the store every Tuesday morning to chat with Gerta and to buy a new classical CD. Mrs. Saunders has been coming to Gerta’s ever since her husband passed away. She says that the music reminds her of him and it makes her feel closer to him.
Another regular customer is 10-year-old Sammy. Sammy comes into the store every Saturday afternoon with his allowance money to buy a new pop CD. Sammy is shy, but he loves to talk about music with Gerta. He says that she always recommends the perfect CD for him.
