His life

Frankie Knuckles, (born January 18, 1955, Bronx, New York, U.S.—died March 31, 2014, Chicago), American DJ and producer who was widely credited with helping to pioneer the development of house music in the 1980s.

Knuckles began his career as a disco DJ in New York City during the 1970s. In 1977 he moved to Chicago and became the resident DJ at Warehouse, a popular nightclub. It was there that he began experimenting with extended disco tracks—often reworking songs by such artists as Harry Thumann (“Underwater”) and Loleatta Holloway (“Hit and Run”)—and mixing them with electronic dance tracks by European artists such as Kraftwerk and Giorgio Moroder. These proto-house tunes eventually became known as “jacker tracks” because partygoers would shout out requests for them at Knuckles’s sets. Later in the decade Knuckles also remixed tracks for such artists as Depeche Mode (“I Feel You [Heaven Mix]”), Mary Jane Girls (“In My House [Club Mix]”), and Stevie Wonder (“Knocks Me Off My Feet [Frankie Knuckles Remix]”). His work on Diana Ross’s Love Hangover (1976) helped to make that song a disco classic.

In 1987 Knuckles released his first single under his own name, “Your Love,” which used a sample of Jamie Principle’s underground hit “Baby Wants to Ride.” The track reached number six on Billboard magazine’s Hot Dance Club Play chart and spawned a number of subsequent hits by Knuckles including “The Whistle Song,” “Workout,” “Tears,” “Rain Falls Down,” and “Babysitters. He also produced Principle’s R&B-infused house track “I Remember House (2009). During the 1990s Knuckles toured internationally and released several mix albums including Beyond the Mix (1991), Tales from Beyond the Groove (1993), Welcome to Paradise: Mixed by Frankie Knuckles (1995), The Shakedown Part II—Mixed by Frankie Knuckles & David Morales (1999),Funky Trunk Mixes Part 1—Mixed by Frankie Knuckles(2000), Further Classics Volume 1—Mixed by Frankie Knuckes(2001), Bang! The duo’s public profile increased exponentially following their appearance in the 2001 film Ocean’s Eleven. In March 2005, Daft Punk released their fourth studio album, Human After All, to mixed reviews from professional critics. Simons and Rowlands met as teenagers on the rave scene in Manchester in the late 1980s. They soon started making and selling acid house music recordings on cassette under various aliases including The 240 Volts (named after an electrical shock) and DJ Pierre’s Wildpitch Project. In 1991, they attended a rave at Liverpool’s State Ballroom hosted by Tyree Cooper featuring DJ sets from Sasha & digweed and Joey Beltram’s Energy Flash record; their track “Song to the Siren” was played by Sasha throughout his set. Returning to Manchester, they hosted a night called “Nude” at Konspiracy nightclub every Monday evening; playtime was loosely structured around a funk jam with a generous sprinkling of house thrown in for good measure.[1][2] The nights attracted DJs such as Mike Pickering from Hacienda who came down to play sets.[citation needed] The duo began working on production after being inspired by hearing pickering play one of their tracks at Rose Club in Scotland during 1992.[citation needed]

Rowlands and Simons used bits of tape to construct rough rhythms before sending them off for someone else to finish (hence the name of their 1997 album Dig Your Own Hole). After finalising tracks such as “Leave Home”, “Song to the Siren”, and “(The Best Part Of) Breaking Up”,[3] they returned them to Mancunian radio station Kiss 102 where Pickering had become a presenter. They distributed copies through local record shops such as Eastern Bloc,[4] Spinderella,[5] Vinyl Exchange,[6] Fat City Recordings[7] and much later through Juno Records.[8][9]
