The Blues Brothers is a 1980 American musical comedy film directed by John Landis. It stars John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd as “Joliet” Jake and Elwood Blues, characters developed from “The Blues Brothers” musical sketch on the NBC variety television series Saturday Night Live. The film’s screenplay was written by Aykroyd and Landis.
Set in the fictional Midwestern town of Canton, Ohio, on a Saturday morning in May 1980, it tells the story of Jake and Elwood, two white brothers who adopt the persona of black bluesmen and set out on a “mission from God” to save the Catholic orphanage in which they were raised from foreclosure. To do so, they must reunite their R&B band and organize a performance to earn $5,000 needed to pay the orphanage’s property tax bill. Along the way, they are targeted by a destructive neo-Nazi group called The National Socialist Party of America led by Illinois Nazis commander Henry Gibson.
Aykroyd conceived it as a musical sketch featuring Blankety Blanks game show host Peter Marshall playing Muddy Waters with Aykroyd and Belushi as members of Waters’ band.[4] SNL creator and producer Lorne Michaels was initially reluctant to produce a feature film based on the sketch,[5] but he eventually relented.[6] The first draft of the screenplay, titled The Return of the Blues Brothers,[7] was completed in just three days;[8] Landis revised it over six weeks.[4][9]
Principal photography began on October 31, 1979; location shooting took place in Chicago (including demolitions for several buildings to make way for Daley Plaza), Los Angeles (for interior shots of Elwood’s apartment building) and suburban Dolton, Illinois (the site of both an early rehearsal scene with Matt “Guitar” Murphy and Cab Calloway’s funeral scene).[10][11][12] Despite Universal Pictures having doubts about casting comedians in dramatic roles (something that would become an issue later with Milk Money),[13][14] Landis felt that Belushi and Aykroyd had sufficient acting chops to carry the movie.[15]
