Introduction

The Real Folk Blues is a compilation album of blues standards by American singer-songwriter and musician Muddy Waters. It was released in 1966 by Chess Records.

Most of the tracks on the album had been previously released on singles or on other albums, but three tracks (“I Can’t Be Satisfied”, “I Feel Like Going Home” and “Mannish Boy”) were newly recorded for the album. The album features Waters’ regular band members at the time, including guitarist Jimmy Rogers, pianist Otis Spann, drummer Francis Clay and bassist Andrew Stephenson.

The Real Folk Blues was Waters’ first album to be released by Chess Records in stereo. It was also his last studio album for the label before he left for rival record company Motown in 1968.

The album was a commercial success, reaching number 13 on Billboard’s Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart, and has been well received by critics. In 2012, it was ranked number 375 on Rolling Stone magazine’s list of the 500 greatest albums of all time.
