History
The Moody Blues are an English rock band formed in Birmingham in 1964, initially consisting of keyboardist Mike Pinder, multi-instrumentalist Ray Thomas, guitarist Denny Laine, drummer Graeme Edge, and bassist Clint Warwick. The band came to prominence playing rhythm and blues music. They made some changes to the lineup in 1966 with Patrick Lodge replacing Warwick on bass and Justin Hayward and John Lodge joining the group as guitarists and vocalists after the departure of Thomas and Laine.
The band’s 1968 album In Search of the Lost Chord is credited with being a pioneer of the psychedelic rock genre for its fusion of electronic music with classical influences. The group followed this with two successful concept albums about space travel: 1970’s A Question of Balance, which charted at number three in the UK and number 17 in the US Billboard 200 albums chart, and 1972’s Seventh Sojourn, which peaked at number one in both countries. They subsequently reached their commercial peak with 1974’s Journey into Amazing Caves, an album that spawned three UK top 20 singles: “Night in White Satin” (number 19), “Question” (number five), and “I’m Just a Singer (In a Rock and Roll Band)” (number 12). The Moodies have sold more than 70 million records worldwide.

The band came to prominence playing rhythm and blues music. They made some changes in personnel and their musical style over the years. By 1967, they had incorporated classical and other influences into their music and were pioneers in the development of art rock and progressive rock. They gained a worldwide following for their holistic approach to music making sometimes known as the “Moody Blues sound”, which was furthered by their successful adaptation to stadium rock touring.
The core members of the Moody Blues remained active until the early 2000s when they started to suffer from health problems. Pinder left the band after suffering a nervous breakdown during the recording of To Our Children’s Children’s Children (1969). Warwick also parted ways with the group due to failing health; he died in 2004. Laine departed in 1968 prior to recording On the Threshold of a Dream (1969) due to creative differences; he was asked to rejoin for Octave (1978), but declined. Edge disclosed in 2018 that he had been struggling with memory issues for some time; no announcement was made regarding his retirement from touring with the group until January 2019 when it was revealed that he would not be part of their 50th anniversary tour due to ongoing physical health problems that make travel difficult for him. Hayward is the only remaining original member still actively touring with The Moody Blues.
