In the early 1980s, Funk formed the band Funkadelic with fellow musicians Bernie Worrell and William Collins. The band’s debut album, Cosmic Slop (1983), was an instant success with critics and fans alike. The album’s mix of R&B, funk and rock influences helped to establish Funkadelic as one of the most original and innovative bands of their time.

Funkadelic went on to release eight more studio albums between 1984 and 1991, all of which were met with critical acclaim. The band’s final album before their disbandment in 1992 was Human Squad (1992).

Early Life and Influences

Darryl Z Funk was born in 1953 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, the eldest of three children. His father, a trumpet player, exposed him to jazz and R&B music at an early age. He was also influenced by the music of bands like Earth, Wind & Fire and Kool & the Gang.

In the early 1970s, Funk attended college at the University of South Florida in Tampa. There he met keyboardist David Garfield and bassist Larry Gray. The three musicians began playing together in a band called DZ Funkadelic. The band fused funk, soul, and R&B into a unique sound that they called “Z Funk.”

After college, Funk moved to Los Angeles to pursue a career in music. He continued to play with DZ Funkadelic and also began session work as a drummer. He played on albums by artists such as George Clinton, Parliament-Funkadelic, Bootsy Collins, Stanley Clarke, Jeff Beck, and Al Jarreau. In addition to his work as a drummer, Funk also began composing and producing his own music. In the 1980s, he released two solo albums: Dreams of Tomorrow (1982) and Streetwise (1984).

Funk has continued to play with DZ Funkadelic and also performs as a solo artist. He has released four more solo albums: Soaring (1998), Higher Ground (2001), Believe (2004), and Heart of My Soul (2007). In addition to his work as a musician, Funk is also an accomplished visual artist. His paintings have been exhibited in galleries in Los Angeles and New York City.

The Return to Funk
