The Chipmunks

Originating in the 1958 novelty song “The Chipmunk Song (Christmas Don’t Be Late)”, Alvin, Simon and Theodore are three small, anthropomorphic chipmunks with dissolved differences between them who live together as Brothers and sing and dances to various genres of music. In most incarnations, the trio are portrayed as children who start situations but try to avoid getting blamed. They are:
-Alvin, the troublemaker of the group
-Simon, the smart one of the group
-Theodore, the lazy and gluttonous one of the group

The Instrumentation

Instrumentation for this song includes lead vocals, background vocals, drums, bass, guitar, keyboard, and horns.

Drums

The drums are a key part of any band, providing the essential beat that other band members play along with. There are many different types of drums, each with its own unique sound and purpose. In a typical rock band, you’ll find a bass drum, snare drum, two tom-toms, and a floor tom.

The bass drum is the largest and deepest sounding of all the drums. It’s played with a large pedal that is operated by the right foot. The bass drum provides the essential “heartbeat” of the band, and can be varied in speed to create different effects.

The snare drum is a small, high-pitched drum that is played with two sticks. It has a sharp, “crackling” sound that helps provide accents and rhythms for the music.

The tom-toms are medium-sized drums that are played with two sticks. They come in different sizes and tune themselves to different pitches (high or low). Tom-toms can be used to create various sound effects, or simply to keep the beat going.

The floor tom is a large drum that sits on the floor and is played with two sticks. It has a deep, resonant sound that adds fullness to the music.

Bass

Bass is a central part of most types of music. The low, deep frequencies give music its foundations and provide a sense of power. In funk music, the bass often takes on a percussive role, providing the rhythm with a “funkier” sound.

Uptown Funk features a number of bass instruments, including electric bass, upright bass, and even synthesized bass. These various bass parts work together to create the funky groove that makes the song so catchy.

Guitar

GUITAR

For the most part, Mark Ronson’s “Uptown Funk” is a feel-good party anthem that you can’t help but dance to. The main instrumentation throughout the track is provided by brass and a funky bassline, with guitar taking a backseat role. However, there are a few moments where the guitar steps into the spotlight, and these moments are worth learning even if you’re not a guitar player.

The first guitar moment comes at 0:46, when a quick riff is played during the horn stabs. This riff is played on the sixth string with your index finger on the fifth fret and your ring finger on the seventh fret. Play four notes, then slide up to the ninth fret and play two more notes.

Bass Clef Instrument
Uptown Funk is written in bass clef and can be played by any bass clef instrument such as the trombone, tuba, bassoon, or bass clarinet.

Trumpet

The trumpet is a musical instrument that is played by blowing into a brass tube. It is one of the oldest musical instruments, dating back to ancient Egypt and the Middle East. Trumpets have been used in warfare for centuries, as they can be heard over long distances. Today, trumpets are used in many different kinds of music, from jazz to classical to rock.

Trombone

The trombone is a musical instrument in the brass family. As with all brass instruments, sound is produced when the player’s vibrating lips cause the air column inside the instrument to vibrate. Unlike other brass instruments, though, a trombone’s slide allows the player to extend the length of the air column, changing the pitch.

There are seven positions on a standard tenor trombone: first, second, third (half slide), fourth (full slide), fifth, sixth (left hand underneath slide holding it up while right hand slides), and seventh (further extension of first position; both hands holding slide). Seventh position is also called “bell up” because in this position the bell section faces upward to project sound better. Alternate positions are available that extend the range further; however these require advanced skill to play efficiently. For really low notes (instepped below fundamental), special extended-range instruments such as bass or contrabass trombones are used.

The modern tenor trombone has an approximate bore of 0.547 inches (13.89 millimeters) and a 6⅞-inch-diameter (175-millimeter) bell flare. The leadpipe connects to either a single or dual independent (detachable) hand slide sections. Dual independent slides are standard for jazz musicians but not for orchestral players because it is easier to lose track of which slide corresponds to which note when both are free moving; orchestral composers almost always specify single independent or dependent slides in their music.

Trombones come in several sizes; each size is designated by its bore and bell flare diameter. The most common sizes are:
-Bore: 0.500 in/12.70 mm—Bell: 6 in/152 mm: Piccolo or P bone
-Bore: 0.508 in/12.90 mm—Bell: 6½ in/165 mm: Soprano or S bone -Bore: 0.562 in/14.27 mm—Bell: 7 in/178 mm: Tenor -Bore :0 .591 in/15 .00 m m — Bell : 8 i n / 203 millimetres : Bass

Saxophone

The main melody of “Uptown Funk” is played by a horn section, which consists of six horns — three tenor saxophones, two alto saxophones, and one baritone saxophone. The instrumentation for the song also includes three trombones, four trumpets, and one bass trombone.
