Introduction
The Soul Train Music Award for Best R&B Soul Single Male was an award given to honor the best in R&B and soul music. It was first presented in 1998 at the 19th Annual Soul Train Music Awards, and was last presented in 2003 at the 24th Annual Soul Train Music Awards. The award was given to the artist who released a solo R&B/soul single that had the highest commercial success during the eligibility period.
History of the Soul Train Music Awards
The Soul Train Music Awards is an annual music award show which previously aired in national television syndication, and honors the best in African American music and entertainment. It is produced by the makers of Soul Train, the program from which it takes its name. The show features performances by various R&B and hip hop artists, and some occasional pop performers.
The awards were established in 1987 to recognize African American musicians who were making an impact on the music industry, but were not getting the mainstream recognition they deserved. The first awards show was held on February 14, 1987, at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel in Beverly Hills, California.
Since its inception, the show has been held annually, with the exception of 1990 and 1993. It was not held in 2002 due to budget issues at BET, but returned in 2003. After a four-year hiatus due to differences between BET and Don Cornelius Productions (the production company for Soul Train), the awards returned in 2009 on Centric (then BET’s sister network). The show was once again put on hiatus after just two years; no official reason was given for this decision. After a five-year break, Soul Train returned on BET’s main network in 2015.
As of 2020, no formal announcements have been made regarding future ceremonies.
