Introduction
Hey Soul Surfer is a song written by American singer-songwriter Colbie Caillat. It was released as the lead single from her third studio album, All of You (2011). The music video for the song was directed by Declan Whitebloom and released on March 18, 2011.
The making of the music video
The music video for “Hey Soul Surfer” was shot in one day at the world-famous Ala Moana Beach Park in Honolulu, Hawaii. The video features beautiful shots of the beach and surfers riding the waves. It also includes footage of the band performing the song on a stage in front of a cheering crowd.
The concept
The idea for the video came about when I wanted to create a soulful, climb-out-of-the-darkness story, with a twist. I decided that it would be interesting to put a different spin on the “hero’s journey” and instead of having the hero save someone, what if the hero had to save herself? I also wanted to tap into my own childhood dream of becoming a professional surfer (I was a competitive swimmer growing up) and what it would look like to merge those two worlds together – the world of surfing and the world of music.
So with that, I came up with the concept of a girl who overcomes a big wave by harnessing her inner power and strength. The song Hey Soul Surfer is all about never giving up and believing in yourself, no matter what obstacles come your way. And I think that’s something we can all relate to.
We started brainstorming ideas for the video and soon realized that we wanted it to be based in Hawaii. We thought it would be amazing to film on the North Shore of Oahu, where some of the biggest waves in the world are found. We were so lucky to be able to work with some amazing surfing talents such as Alana Blanchard, Bethany Hamilton, Malia Manuel and Coco Ho – all of whom helped bring this video to life.
We spent 3 days filming on location and it was an incredible experience. The girls were absolutely amazing – they were charging big waves and completely killing it! It was so inspiring to see them in action and they definitely made this video what it is.
I’m so excited for everyone to see the finished product! I really hope you enjoy watching it as much as we enjoyed making it 🙂
The shoot
We hired a professional videographer to come and shoot the music video for us. The shoot lasted for two days and was a lot of fun. We had a great time working with the videographer and the finished product turned out great!
The editing process
After the shoot, it was time to begin editing the footage together to create the final music video. This was a lengthy process, as there were hours of footage to go through and we wanted to make sure that we included all the best bits! We also had to bear in mind the song lyrics so that the video told a story that matched up with what Bethany was singing about.
Once we had put together a rough cut of the video, we showed it to Bethany and she loved it! From there, we made a few tweaks here and there until we were both happy with the final result. It was so exciting to see the video come together and we can’t wait for everyone to see it!
The final product
