The Society sponsors a weekly folk music series from September through May, featuring both local and touring performers. The concerts are held on Wednesdays at the Woods Hole Community Hall, located at 68 Water Street in Woods Hole. Concerts begin at 7:30 PM and are followed by an open jam session. Admission is $5 for members, $10 for non-members, and $3 for students and seniors.

The Society also sponsors an annual folk festival in August, featuring a variety of local and regional performers. The festival takes place on the grounds of the Woods Hole Historical Museum, located at 567 Quissett Avenue in Woods Hole. Admission is $10 for adults, $5 for children under 12, and free for members of the Society.

History

The Woods Hole Folk Music Society was founded in 1976 by a group of volunteers who shared a love of folk music. They started out by holding informal sing-alongs in their homes, and eventually began booking concerts by touring folk musicians.

In the early 1980s, the Society began holding monthly concerts in the Community Hall, and shortly thereafter began presenting two concerts each month. In recent years, we have expanded our programming to include an annual Folk Festival, AmericanaFest (an annual festival featuring music from the Americana genre), dances, workshops, open mics, and more. We also operate a small folk music record label, WHATnot Records.

The Woods Hole Folk Music Society is run entirely by volunteers and is supported entirely by member dues and donations. We are a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, and all contributions are tax deductible.

Concerts

The Woods Hole Folk Music Society presents concerts featuring outstanding traditional, contemporary, and World music performers from all over the US and beyond. Most concerts are at 8 pm on Saturdays at the Woods Hole Community Hall. There is an open mike at most Saturday concerts; sign-up begins at 7:30 pm. Concerts are generally preceded by a potluck supper at 6 pm; please bring food to share.

Workshops

The Woods Hole Folk Music Society sponsors two different kinds of workshops: those open to the public which are usually taught by our regular performers, and those which areinvitation-only events for more advanced musicians.

Public Workshops: These workshops are suitable for players of all levels of experience, from beginner to lifelong folkie. No advance preparation is necessary. Workshop topics have included songwriting, banjo styles, rhythm guitar, fingerstyle guitar, old-time fiddle tunes, beginning and intermediate level fiddle tunes, ukulele strums, harmony singing, and more. Public workshops are usually scheduled for an hour or two before the evening’s concert. Instructors donate their time and there is no charge for these workshops; however a good will donation to the artist instructors is greatly appreciated.

Advanced Workshops: These clinics are geared towards more experienced players who want to spend some focused time learning new material or refining their skills on a particular instrument or in a certain style. Dances

Dances are a big part of the Woods Hole Folk Music Society’s programming. We have a Spring and Fall contradance series, as well as occasional special dances. Our contradances are held at the Woods Hole Community Hall, and feature live music and calling. No partner or experience is necessary – come join the fun!

For more than 80 years, the Society has been bringing world-renowned folk musicians to the historic village of Woods Hole, Massachusetts.
