The Crooked Road

The Crooked Road: Virginia’s Heritage Music Trail is a 400-mile driving route that follows the historic path of the Appalachian Mountains from Breaks Interstate Park on the Kentucky border through to Wise County on the Tennessee border. The trail is home to more than 50 traditional musicians, most of whom live in rural communities and play music that has been passed down through generations.
There are a number of ways to experience The Crooked Road. You can take a self-guided driving tour, stopping at venues along the way to enjoy performances by some of the regions best musicians. Or you can attend one of the many events and festivals that are held throughout the year.
The Richmond Folk Festival
The Richmond Folk Festival is an annual event that celebrates the traditional music and dance of cultures from around the world. The festival is free to the public and takes place in downtown Richmond, Virginia.
The Richmond Folk Festival features a wide variety of music and dance performances on multiple stages, as well as workshops, movies, food vendors, and more. The festival also hosts a number of competitions, including the National Folk Festival Storytelling Competition and the National Folk Music Championships.

The American Folklife Center
The American Folklife Center at the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C., collects, documents, preserves and makes available traditional folk music and folk arts of all cultures and regions of the United States.
The Center was established by Congress in 1976 as part of the Library of Congress to preserve and present American folklife through programs of research, documentation, archival preservation, reference service, live performance, broadcasting, publication and training. The Center includes the Archive of Folk Culture, which was founded in 1928 as a repository for American folklore material collected by others. Today the collections number more than 3 million items and represent a wide variety of cultural groups throughout the United States and around the world.
