Baroque opera is characterized by its use of lavish sets and costumes, elaborate musical scores, and extravagant stagecraft.

What is the difference between Baroque Opera and other types of Opera?

While there are many different types of opera that have been performed throughout the years, Baroque opera is a specific type of opera that was popular during the Baroque period. Unlike other types of opera, Baroque opera is characterized by simpler plots and a focus on the emotions of the characters. Additionally, Baroque opera often features more dramatic scenes and heightened emotions.

What is the workshop?

The workshop is a 3-day event that will take place on July 7th, 8th, and 9th at the University of Toronto. It is open to anyone who is interested in learning about or improving their skills in music and baroque opera. The workshop will be led by Aaron Compland, who is an accomplished musician and opera singer. He has worked with some of the world’s most renowned orchestras and opera companies, and has taught at the prestigious Juilliard School.

What is the purpose of the workshop?

The workshop is designed to provide an intensive introduction to baroque opera for aspiring professional singers and advanced students. The focus will be on developing vocal and dramatic technique through work on arias and ensembles from the full spectrum of baroque opera, from early works by Monteverdi to late-seventeenth century masterpieces by Cavalli. In addition, there will be classes on vocal health, Alexander Technique, and other topics related to the profession of singing.
