Set in the Old Kingdom of Egypt, it was commissioned by Cairo’s Khedivate Opera House and had its première there in 1871, conducted by Giovanni Bottesini. Ghislanzoni’s scheme follows a fictional storyline suggested by Mariette, which incorporates various elements from Giuseppe Simone Assemani’s Descrizione dell’Egitto as well as John Gardner Wilkinson’s popular Manners and Customs of the Ancient Egyptians.

Aida eventually premiered in Milan at La Scala on 8 February 1872, conducted by Carlo Pellicioli. Although the premiere performance was considered a failure,Verdi made significant changes to the score for subsequent performances. Later that year, the opera was staged with success in Bologna and Naples.

Ghislanzoni’s libretto was based on a scenario which Mariette had prepared for Verdi’s consideration in 1867/68.

Against the advice of some of his friends, Verdi had chosen to set a contemporary story, rather than an historical event, because he wanted “its events to be immediately recognizable and credible as happening now and in Rome.” He was unconvinced that a known historical event such as the Siege of Troy or the Battle of Leipzig would work.
