The Velvet Underground

Formed in 1964, The Velvet Underground was an American rock band that achieved little commercial success but exerted a huge cultural influence. The group was founded by singer/guitarist Lou Reed and multi-instrumentalist John Cale, who both brought avant-garde and experimental sensibilities to rock music.

The Velvet Underground’s self-titled third album is often cited as one of the most influential records of all time. It features the band’s best-known song, “All Tomorrow’s Parties,” as well as the Reed classic “I’m Waiting for the Man.” The record was produced by legendary British musician and producer Brian Eno, who would go on to collaborate with Reed on a number of subsequent solo albums.

Pavement

Pavement was an American indie rock band that formed in Stockton, California in 1989. The band consisted of Stephen Malkmus (vocals and guitar), Scott Kannberg (guitar and vocals), Mark Ibold (bass), Steve West (drums) and Bob Nastanovich (percussion). Pavement’s style of music was characterized by catchy melodies, unconventional song structures, and cryptic lyrics.

Pavement released their first album, Slanted and Enchanted, in 1992 to critical acclaim. The album helped to establish the lo-fi aesthetic that would come to be associated with the band. Pavement’s follow-up album, Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain, was released in 1994 and is often considered to be one of the classic albums of the 1990s.

After a five-year hiatus, Pavement reunited for a series of tours in 2010 and 2011. The band’s final album, Quarantine the Past, was released in 2011. Pavement officially disbanded in 1999, but their influence can still be felt in the music of today.

Guided by Voices

Guided by Voices is an American indie rock band from Dayton, Ohio, United States, founded in 1983. Heavily influenced by British Invasion rock, the group began as a prolific home-recording project of singer-songwriter Robert Pollard, who released a plethora of lo-fi cassettes under the name Guided by Voices throughout the 1980s and early 1990s before signing with Matador Records in 1993. Usually credited to “Guided By Voices” (without “the”), the group’s musical style has varied considerably over its career, but often employs traditional pop melodies with unconventional but concise song structures and sequencing delivered with a workmanlike minimalism. GBV were active until 2004, when they announced their dissolution. Pollard reunited the band in 2010.

The band’s earliest incarnation included bassist Jim Greer and drummer Mitch Mitchell. This lineup recorded their first album, Devonthhous eandronk (better known asMonster Rally), which was self-released on cassette tape in 1986. The album was reissued on vinyl LP format in 1993 by Rockville Records. After releasing an EP titled Self-Inflicted Aerial Nostalgia later that year, Mitchell left the band and was replaced by drummer Kevin Fennell for their next album Sandbox (1987). Fennell also left after this album’s release leaving Greer as the sole member of the group until he recruited new members in late 1987: guitarist Greg Demos (later replaced by Tobin Sprout), singer Robert Pollard and drummer Karl H Produced by Ric Ocasek of The Cars fame Bee Thousand became one major label Elektra Records cultivated a more polished sound than Guided By Voice s earlier releases. Critics often cite it as one of the best lo-fi indie rock albums of all time , although some contend that its use of studio production detracts from its status as a true lo-fi record . Despite generally positive reviews , sales were poor .

The album failed to sell more than 50 , 000 copies , which led to Guided By Voice s departure from Elektra . They returned to their lo-fi roots for Alien Lanes (1995) , which was recorded in just six days for $600 . This quick turnaround resulted in an even more raw – sounding record than Bee Thousand . Alien Lanes was ranked 35th on Pitchfork Media s Top 100 Albums of 1995 list and is considered one of the most influential lo – fi indie rock albums of all time .

The band’s sound owes much to the sludge metal and hardcore punk music of the 1980s, as well as proto-grunge.

Dinosaur Jr. was one of the first groups to be tagged as “punk/metal” and one of the first to successfully merge heavy guitar noise with melodic pop songs. They were influential in bringing alternative rock into the mainstream.

The band’s third album You’re Living All Over Me (1987) was ranked 254th on Pitchfork Media’s 500 Greatest Albums of All Time and became their best-selling album. Following the break-up of Dinosaur Jr. in 1989, Mascis went on to form the alternative rock group Dinosaur Jr., while Barlow formed Sebadoh with Eric Gaffney and Jason Loewenstein.
