Best Overall

The year 2012 has been a banner year for alternative rock music. So many great bands have released new albums, and there have been some truly fantastic songs released as well. Here are my picks for the best overall alternative rock songs of 2012.

“I Will Wait” by Mumford & Sons
Mumford & Sons are one of the most popular bands in the world right now, and with good reason. Their music is incredibly catchy and accessible, yet it still has a lot of depth and emotion. “I Will Wait” is one of their best songs yet, with a soaring chorus and an absolutely massive sound.

“Babel” by Mumford & Sons
The title track from Mumford & Sons’ latest album is another excellent song from the band. It’s a bit more subdued than “I Will Wait”, but it’s just as beautiful and emotive. Again, the chorus is absolutely incredible, and the song builds to a huge climax.

“Little Talks” by Of Monsters and Men
Of Monsters and Men are another enormously popular band that had a breakout year in 2012. “Little Talks” is their biggest hit so far, and it’s easy to see why. It’s an incredibly catchy song with a great hook, and it’s just a lot of fun to listen to.

Best New Artist

In 2012, there was no shortage of great new alternative rock music. Here are our picks for the best new artist of the year.

Whether you were jamming out to fun.’s catchy pop hits or getting lost in Mumford & Sons’ epic folk anthems, there was plenty of great music to choose from. But after careful consideration, we’ve decided that the best new artist of 2012 is Of Monsters and Men.

Of Monsters and Men is a six-piece Icelandic band that formed in 2010. They gained popularity in 2011 with their debut single “Little Talks,” which became a top ten hit in several countries. Their debut album, My Head Is an Animal, was released in April 2012 and reached number one on the U.S. Billboard Alternative Albums chart.

What sets Of Monsters and Men apart from other artists is their ability to create complex and interesting songs without ever losing sight of melody and hooks. Their songs are epic yet accessible, and they have a rare magic that makes them instantly likable. We can’t wait to see what they do next.

Best Male Artist

Upon first listen, it’s easy to fall in love with the oxymoronic California indie group, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club. The trio’s seventh album, Specter at the Feast, was one of the best rock albums of 2012 and showcased their exceptional songwriting chops. The album is a perfect blend of BRMC’s signature dark, introspective lyrics and their catchy, head-bobbing melodies. And while all three members contribute to the songwriting, it’s singer/guitarist Peter Hayes who really shines on this album. His husky voice is the perfect complement to the band’s dark, brooding sound.

Best Female Artist

In 2012, there were many great female artists in the alternative rock genre. Here are some of the best:

-Paramore
-Rilo Kiley
-The Yeah Yeah Yeahs
-Tegan and Sara
– Hole
-L7
