Nirvana

Nirvana was one of the most successful and influential bands of the early 1990s. They were responsible for bringing grunge to the mainstream, and their 1991 album Nevermind is often cited as one of the most important and influential albums of all time. Nirvana was formed in Seattle, Washington in 1987 by singer/guitarist Kurt Cobain and bassist Krist Novoselic. drummer Dave Grohl joined the band in 1990, and the three quickly became a force to be reckoned with, releasing their debut album Bleach in 1989. Nirvana’s second album, Nevermind, was released in 1991 and quickly reached the top of the charts, thanks in part to the massive success of the single “Smells Like Teen Spirit.” Nirvana became one of the biggest bands in the world and Kurt Cobain quickly became one of the most iconic figures in rock & roll, but tragedy struck in 1994 when Cobain committed suicide at the age of 27. The band’s final studio album, In Utero, was released later that year to critical acclaim. Nirvana continued to be a hugely popular band after Cobain’s death, thanks to their enduring hits like “Smells Like Teen Spirit,” “Come As You Are,” “Lithium,” and “Heart-Shaped Box.”

Pearl Jam

Pearl Jam is an American rock band formed in 1990 in Seattle, Washington. The band’s line-up comprises founding members Jeff Ament (bass guitar), Stone Gossard (rhythm guitar) and Mike McCready (lead guitar), as well as Eddie Vedder (lead vocals, guitar), who joined the band in 1991. Matt Cameron (drums) has been with the band since 1998, making him the fifth official member of Pearl Jam.

Since its inception, Pearl Jam has released ten studio albums and sold over 32 million records in the United States, becoming one of the best-selling bands of all time. In 2006, Pearl Jam was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a part of their first year of eligibility. Rolling Stone ranked Pearl Jam number 84 on their list of the 100 Greatest Artists of All Time.

Alice in Chains

Alice in Chains is an American rock band formed in Seattle, Washington, in 1987 by guitarist and songwriter Jerry Cantrell and original lead vocalist Layne Staley. The initial lineup was rounded out by drummer Sean Kinney and bassist Mike Starr, who was replaced in 1993 by Mike Inez. Despite having substantial trouble with addiction, Alice in Chains was one of the most successful music acts of the early 1990s. Their first album, Facelift (1990), was certified platinum and has gone on to be quadruple-platinum. The second album, Dirt (1992), was also a huge success, reaching No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart and being certified sextuple-platinum. The band’s third album, Alice in Chains (1995), was not as commercially successful as its predecessors but still managed to go double platinum.

The band has had 14 top ten songs on the Mainstream Rock Tracks chart and have been nominated for nine Grammy Awards. They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2019 as part of their first year of eligibility.

Soundgarden

On A Wave by Soundgarden is one of the best grunge albums on Amazon Music. The album was released in 1996 and it was the last studio album that the band released before Chris Cornell’s death in 2017. The album peaked at number two on the Billboard 200 chart and it was certified double platinum by the RIAA.

Stone Temple Pilots

If Pearl Jam, Nirvana, and Alice in Chains defined grunge’s sound, Stone Temple Pilots defined its attitude. As the heavier, more cynical California cousins of Seattle’s rain-soaked flannel-and-angst set, STP’s music was as darkly atmospheric as it was indebted to classic metal and arena rock — a sound that found them achieving massive commercial success in the early ’90s. Scott Weiland’s distinctive croon — which at times recalled Jeff Lynne, Robert Plant, and even Ian Hunter — helped make them one of the most popular American rock bands of their era.
