In 1990, the American Music Awards were not handed out due to the Gulf War.
The first recipient of the award was Olivia Newton-John. She was also the recipient in 1975 and 1976.
Whitney Houston is the only artist to have won the award three times, winning consecutively from 1986 to 1988.
Mariah Carey is the most nominated artist in this category with eight nominations, five of which she won. Her wins spanned from 1991 to 1995.
