The American Music Award for Favorite Rap/Hip Hop Band/Duo/Group is an award presented annually by the American Music Awards (AMA). It was established in 2001 and was first presented to Outkast. The award is given to the artist who has released the best rap/hip hop album of the year.

History

The American Music Award for Favorite Rap/Hip Hop Band/Duo/Group was first awarded at the American Music Awards of 2006. Nelly, Diddy and Snoop Dogg were the first recipients of the award. The award was not awarded in 2007. In 2008, it was brought back and awarded to Flo Rida. The award has been given out every year since 2008.

The American Music Award for Favorite Rap/Hip Hop Artist is an award presented to a rapper, hip hop duo, or hip hop group by the American Music Awards (AMAs). The award was first presented to N.W.A in 1989 and was presented again in 1990 to Public Enemy. It has been presented annually since 1991. The first award was presented to N.W.A.

History

The American Music Award for Favorite Rap/Hip Hop Artist has been awarded since 1974. In 1974 and 1975, the award was presented under the name Best Rhythm & Blues Artist. It has been given annually since 1992, but was not awarded between 2011 and 2014. It was replaced by the American Music Award for Favorite Rap/Hip-Hop Artist in 2015.

The award was first presented to The Ohio Players in 1974. The most recent winner is Cardi B.

The American Music Award for Favorite Rap/Hip Hop Album is an award presented at the American Music Awards. It was first awarded in 2001 and has been presented every year since. The award goes to a rap or hip hop album of the year as determined by the public.

History

The American Music Award for Favorite Rap/Hip Hop Album was first presented to Cypress Hill at the 21st American Music Awards in 1993. It was one of four categories created to recognize rap and hip hop music (the others being Favorite Pop/Rock Album, Favorite Rap/Hip Hop Artist, and Favorite Rap/Hip Hop New Artist), and was awarded until 2005. In 2006, the category was split into two: Favorite Rap/Hip Hop Album and Favorite Rap/Hip Hop Band/Duo/Group. Ja Rule was the last recipient of the award in 2005 for his album Loyalty.

The award was presented again in 2007 as Favorite Rap/Hip Hop Album. Lil Wayne’s album Tha Carter III became the first album to win the award twice, winning in 2008 and 2009. In 2010, Eminem’s album Recovery became the second album to win the award twice. Drake’s album Take Care won in 2011 and 2012, making Drake the third artist to win the award twice. Kendrick Lamar’s album good kid, m.A.A.d city won in 2013 and 2014, becoming the fourth artist to win the award twice. In 2015 and 2016, no award was presented due to a lack of nominations.

Winners

The American Music Award for Favorite Rap/Hip Hop Album was first presented to Outkast at the 26th Annual American Music Awards in 1999. The award was discontinued in favor of the American Music Award for Favorite Rap/Hip Hop Band/Duo/Group in 2010. No further entries have been made since then.
