In 1976, the American Music Award for Favorite Soul/R&B Band/Duo/Group was presented to Chicago-based band Earth, Wind & Fire. The band was also nominated that year in the category of Favorite Pop/Rock Band/Duo/Group, which they won. Earth, Wind & Fire became the first (and so far only) band to win both awards in consecutive years.

The band would go on to be nominated for the award a total of nine times between 1974 and 1983, winning on three occasions. Other multiple winners of the award include The Isley Brothers (4), Lionel Richie (3), Stevie Wonder (3), Boyz II Men (2), Outkast (2), and New Edition (2).
