The songs in The Collection represent some of the most important themes in American pop music, including love, loss, hope, dreams, and friendship. These are the songs that have soundtracked our lives, and we hope they will do the same for you.

Genres

Pop music is a genre of popular music that originated in its modern form in the United States and United Kingdom during the mid-1950s. The terms “popular music” and “pop music” are often used interchangeably, although the former describes all music that is popular.

Pop music is eclectic, and often borrowing elements from other styles such as urban, dance, rock, Latin, and country. Identifying factors include generally short to medium-length songs written in a basic format (often the Verse-Chorus form), as well as common use of repeated choruses, melodic tunes, and hooks. Harmonic analysis indicates that pop songs are traditionally constructed within diatonic modes and scales such as major and minor.

The most common time signature for pop songs is 4/4 (known as common time), with a moderate tempo around 120 beats per minute. This time signature was derived from rock ‘n’ roll. Pop feels open and expansive in its melodies while utilizing simple harmonic progressions.

The pre-chorus or bridge sections are commonly used to introduce variety into the song or prepare the listener for the chorus. These sections typically containtown harmonic progressions with chord changes every two beats. The usage of these sections has been derived from gospel musicand blues.

Permanent Exhibits

Once you’ve walked the red carpet, you’ll be able to explore our three floors of exhibits which tell the story of America’s pop music journey.

On the first floor, you’ll find the Hitsville U.S.A. Gallery which chronicles the history of Motown Records and features many artifacts from Hitsville’s famed Studio A, including the original Motown sign. You’ll also see exhibits on ABBA, Prince, Madonna, Michael Jackson, and more!

On the second floor, you can explore The Roots of Rock & Roll Gallery which highlights the artists who laid the groundwork for rock & roll in the 1940s and 1950s. You’ll see exhibits on Elvis Presley, Chuck Berry, Little Richard, and more!

The third floor is home to The British Invasion Gallery which features exhibits on The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Who, and more! You can also learn about how American pop music went global in this gallery.

In addition to our permanent exhibit galleries, we also have a rotating display of artifacts from our vast collection. These artifacts are on loan from both individuals and institutions from around the world.

The America’s Pop Music Hall of Fame offers a civic leadership program, educational programs, internships, a speakers bureau, and research grants. The civic leadership program is designed for high school students and adults who want to learn more about the music industry and pop music history. The educational programs include lectures, workshops, and performances for school children and teachers. Internships are available for college students interested in music industry careers. The speakers bureau provides presentations about pop music history for community groups and organizations. Research grants are available to scholars working on projects related to pop music history.

Events
