The Best of the Indie Rock Persuasion

Angry Girl Music is the best of the Indie Rock Persuasion. It is an independent music platform that showcases the top female-fronted bands from around the world. The site is updated daily with new music, interviews, and features.

The Pixies

The first band on my list is the Pixies. The Pixies were an American alternative rock band formed in Boston, Massachusetts in 1986. The group disbanded in 1993, but reunited in 2004.

The Pixies were one of the most influential bands of the late 1980s and early 1990s. They are often cited as a major influence by artists such as Nirvana, Radiohead, and Blur.

The band was formed by Black Francis (lead vocals, rhythm guitar), Joey Santiago (lead guitar), Kim Deal (bass, vocals) and David Lovering (drums). Santiago and Francis are the only two members who have been with the band throughout its entire history.

The Pixies released their debut album, Surfer Rosa, in 1988 to critical acclaim. The album included the singles “Monkey Gone to Heaven” and “Gigantic”.

Their next album, Doolittle, was released in 1989 and was an even bigger success than Surfer Rosa. It included the singles “Here Comes Your Man”, “Debaser” and “Wave of Mutilation”.

After releasing a fourth album, Trompe le Monde, in 1991, the Pixies disbanded due to tension between Francis and Deal. Francis began a solo career under the name Frank Black, while Deal formed a new band called The Breeders with her twin sister Kelly Deal.

In 2004, the Pixies reunited for a series of sold-out concerts across North America and Europe. They have since released two new albums: Come On Pilgrim… It’s Surfer Rosa (2004) and Headsplit (2014).

Sleater-Kinney

One of the most popular and successful American rock bands of the last decade, Sleater-Kinney was formed in 1994 by Carrie Brownstein and Corin Tucker. The two had been friends since their early teens, and when they met again as adults, they discovered that they shared a common love of music. They began playing together informally, and soon decided to form a band.

Sleater-Kinney’s music is a mix of punk and indie rock, with elements of pop and folk thrown in. Their sound is raw and powerful, with elements of both tension and release. Lyrically, the band is known for their sharp wit and social commentary. They are unafraid to tackle difficult subjects, and their songs often deal with themes of feminism, sexuality, and politics.

Sleater-Kinney has released seven studio albums, all to critical acclaim. Their most recent album, The Woods, was released in 2005 to wide acclaim. It was named one of the best albums of the year by several publications, including Pitchfork Media and Rolling Stone.

Yeah Yeah Yeahs

Formed in New York in the late 1990s, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs quickly built a reputation for their electrifying live shows and for their unique blend of punk, art rock, and noise pop. Fronted by the charismatic Karen O, the band has released five critically acclaimed albums, the most recent of which, Mosquito, was released in 2013. With its angular guitars, propulsive rhythms, and O’s hypnotic vocals, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs’ sound is both instantly recognizable and impossible to pigeonhole. In addition to their work as a band, members O and Nick Zinner have also collaborated with such luminaries as David Byrne, LCD Soundsystem, and Santigold.

The Future of Angry Girl Music

The music industry is in a state of flux. Record sales are plummeting, concert attendance is down, and the internet has forever changed the way we consume music. So what’s an angry girl to do? We say: keep calm and rock on. The future of music is bright for the indie rock persuasion. Here’s why.

The Breeders

The Breeders are an American alternative rock band formed in 1988 by Kim Deal of the Pixies and Tanya Donelly of Throwing Muses. The band has experienced several lineup changes, with Deal being the only consistent member. They are currently a trio with Josephine Wiggs on bass and drummer Britt Walford (formerly of Slint).

The band’s first album,Pod (1990), was moderately successful and included the single “Cannonball”, which reached No. 44 on the US Modern Rock Tracks chart. The follow-up Last Splash (1993) was a commercial and critical success, peaking at No. 7 on the Billboard 200 and eventually selling more than two million copies worldwide. It included the platinum-certified single “Cannonball” as well as the singles “Do You Love Me Now?,” “Divine Hammer,” and “No Aloha.” The band’s third album, Title TK (2002), was their first album in ten years and marked something of a comeback for the band. It peaked at No. 27 on Billboard’s Independent Albums chart and received generally positive reviews from critics.

In 2013, Donelly left the band to focus on her solo career, leaving Deal as the only original member remaining in the group. In 2019, The Breeders released their fifth studio album, All Nerve. The album was lauded by critics and peaked at No. 9 on Billboard’s Alternative Albums chart, making it their highest-charting album to date.

The Breeders are often considered to be one of the most influential bands of the ’90s indie rock movement. They have been credited with helping to bring alternative rock into the mainstream and for helping to popularize the use of distorted guitars in indie rock music.

Bikini Kill

Bikini Kill is a riot grrrl band formed in Olympia, Washington, in 1990 by singer and guitarist Kathleen Hanna, guitarist Billy Karren, bassist Kathi Wilcox, and drummer Tobi Vail. The group is credited with sparking the riot grrrl movement of the early 1990s through their political lyrics, zines, and confronting live performances. They released two EPs, Revolution Girl Style Now (1991) and New Radio (1993), as well as their debut album Pussy Whipped (1993). After moving to Washington, D.C., the band became a key figure in the city’s punk scene. Bikini Kill toured internationally and collaborated with other like-minded bands before disbanding in 1997.
