The History of Dubstep

Dubstep is a genre of electronic dance music that originated in South London in the late 1990s. It is generally characterized by sparse, syncopated rhythmic patterns with bass lines that contain prominent sub-bass frequencies. The style emerged as a development of garage music and dub reggae. In the United Kingdom, the earliest dubstep releases date back to 1998, and the genre rose to prominence in the mid-2000s.

The term “dubstep” in reference to a genre of music was first used by Space Dimension Controller in 2002, when he released his debut EP The Pathway to Tresor on the now-defunct record label Tempa. The following year, Neil Kolo of Planet Mu released a compilation album titled Tectonic Plates, which included tracks from both Space Dimension Controller and Kolo’s own productions.

In 2010, BBC Radio 1 DJ Mary Anne Hobbs popularized the term with her Dubstep Warz show, which featured performances by prominent dubstep producers such as Skream and Digital Mystikz. Since then, the genre has been increasingly embraced by the mainstream music industry; in 2012, dubstep producer Calvin Harris topped the UK singles chart with his single “Bounce”, which featured guest vocals from Kelis.

While early dubstep was often characterized by dark and gloomy soundscapes, many modern producers have sought to experiment with a wider range of sonic palette. as well as incorporating elements from other genres such as hip hop, electronica, and trap music.

In the early 2000s, dubstep began to spread and evolve beyond the South London scene via releases on independent record labels and the international success of artists such as Dizzee Rascal, Hawkeye, and Pendulum.
