History

Anticon is an American record label based in San Francisco, California, founded in 1998 by rappers Doseone, Why?, Jel, and Odd Nosdam. Anticon’s first release was the record label’s compilation album, Music for the Advancement of Hip Hop, which featured the artists affiliated with the label at that time.

The Early Years

Anticon was founded in 1998 by Sole and Alias, two hip hop artists who were dissatisfied with the limitations of the genre. They were soon joined by Dose One, Jel, and Why?. The group’s first release was the EP *Games* (1999), which was followed by their debut album *Bisquit* (2000).

The early years of Anticon were marked by a DIY approach to music-making, with the group’s members working collaboratively to create albums that challenged the conventions of hip hop. This experimental approach led to a series of critically acclaimed releases, including *The Weather* (2001), * Civic Duty* (2002), and *Theme* (2003).

In 2005, Anticon released their most commercially successful album to date, *NeverEnding Winter*. The album’s mix of pop sensibilities and experimental production helped to broaden the appeal of the group, and it remains their best-selling release.

In recent years, Anticon has continued to evolve, releasing a series of well-received albums that have pushed the boundaries of hip hop. These include *Adult Swim* (2009), *Skelethon* (2012), and *Imaad Wasif & Friends* (2014).

The Golden Age

In the mid- to late 1980s, gangsta rap became the predominant subgenre of hip hop. Beginning in New York City, East Coast hardcore rap became mainstream, largely due to the critical and commercial success of artists such as Boogie Down Productions, Public Enemy, EPMD, Organized Konfusion, Schoolly D, N.W.A and Beastie Boys. West Coast G-funk dominated mainstream hip hop for several years during the early 1990s with artists such as Dr. Dre, Eazy-E and Snoop Dogg. Anderson cites Kurtis Blow’s 1980 single “The Breaks” as an early influence on West Coast production values in hip hop; Blow’s opening keyboard line is sampled on hundreds of G-funk tracks. The Miami bass subgenre also achieved popularity during the 1980s; it dominated pop charts in 1983 with songs like “Flash Light” by Parliament and “Bass Rock Express” by MC ADE.

The Post-Golden Age

After the commercial and critical success of N.W.A.’s Straight Outta Compton in 1988, rap music became more mainstream, with artists such as Public Enemy, Beastie Boys, and Tupac Shakur becoming household names. However, this also coincided with a change in the sound of rap music, as producers began to experiment with new styles and textures. This period is often referred to as the “post-golden age” of rap music.
