arctic monkeys

Formed in Sheffield, England, in 2002, Arctic Monkeys abused the power of the internet to become one of Britain’s biggest bands of the new millennium, topping the charts with their debut album less than two years after it was self-released on MySpace. Musically and lyrically, they were tagged as part of a wave of post-punk revivalists that included Franz Ferdinand and Kaiser Chiefs, although Arctic Monkeys’ owe more to Britpop influences like Oasis. Where rivals depended on glammed-up artifice or straightforward party anthems to move units, Arctic Monkeys favored a more observational songwriting approach informed by such various artists as the Kinks, Pavement, and Pulp. The result wasbite-size sketches of everyday life delivered with wit and worming melodies by frontman Alex Turner. [edit] History

The Strokes were formed in New York City in 1998 by Julian Casablancas (lead vocals), Nick Valensi (guitar), Albert Hammond Jr. (rhythm guitar), Nikolai Fraiture (bass guitar) and Fabrizio Moretti (drums).[8] All five members attended Dwight School together before moving on to different schools while still remaining friends. At age 13 they met future manager Ryan Gentles at a local barbershop while waiting to get their hair cut.[9] The band began rehearsing together and playing shows around town before releasing their first EP A Little Damage in 2001 on Casablancas’ independent label Rough Trade Records. To record their first full length album Is This It, the band used Gordon Raphael who had previously worked with The White Stripes and Blur.[10] The album was recorded quickly over two weeks in December 2000 due to financial constraints;[11] however this fast recording session helped establish a trademark sound for the band that consist of reverb-drenched guitars and tight melodies. Upon its release on July 30, 2001 Is This It received high praise from music critics.[12][13][14][15] NME named it number 2 on its year end list “Albums of the Year 2001”.[16] Pitchfork Media named it number 1 on its year end list “Pitchfork’s Top 50 Albums of 2001”.[17] In 2005 Rolling Stone ranked it number 2 on its list “The 500 Greatest Albums Since Rolling Stone Was Founded In 1967″[18]. The band’s follow-up album, 2004’s The Libertines, was less successful commercially but was still praised by critics. The Libertines disbanded in 2008 due to Doherty’s drug addiction and Barât’s mental health issues, but the band has reunited several times since then, including for a headlining set at Glastonbury Festival in 2010.
