Reggae

Reggae is a music genre that originated in Jamaica in the late 1960s. The term also denotes the modern popular music of Jamaica and its diaspora. A 1968 single by Toots and the Maytals, “Do the Reggay” was the first popular song to use the word “reggae,” effectively naming the genre and introducing it to a global audience. While sometimes used in a broad sense to refer to most types of Jamaican music, the term reggae more properly denotes a particular music style that was strongly influenced by traditional mento as well as American Jazz and Rhythm and Blues. Reggae has spread to many countries across the world, often incorporating local instruments and fusing with other genres.

Dancehall

Dancehall is a type of Jamaican popular music that originated in the late 1970s. Initially, dancehall was a more sparse version of reggae than the roots style, which had dominated much of the 1970s. In the mid-1980s, digital instrumentation became more prevalent, changing the sound considerably, with digital dancehall becoming increasingly characterized by faster rhythms. Dancehall music saw mainstream success in Jamaica throughout the 1980s, 1990s and 2000s, and international success in the 1990s and 2000s.

Ska

Ska is a genre of music that originated in Jamaica in the late 1950s. Ska is characterized by a bouncy rhythm, brass instrumentation, and lyrics about social issues. Ska quickly spread from Jamaica to other parts of the world, and it was especially popular in the United Kingdom in the 1960s. Today, ska is enjoyed by music lovers all over the world.

The Artists

Ardmore Music Hall will be hosting a Jamaican themed night on March 3rd starting at 8 pm. The artists for the evening will be the Reggae sound system, Iration. Iration will be joined by special guests, The Green. The Green is a Hawaiian roots reggae band.

The Headliner

The headliner for the show is none other than The Wailers. Formed in 1969, The Wailers are best known as Bob Marley’s backing band, and helped bring reggae to a global audience. The Wailers have been touring since 1981, and their live shows are legendary. You won’t want to miss this rare opportunity to see them in concert!

The Support Act

The opening act for the evening is The Extensions, a five-piece band from Philadelphia that infuses reggae, rock, and hip-hop into their music. The group has been compared to Rebelution and Iration, and their lyrics are conscious and uplifting.

Conclusion

Reggae music has been popularized by artists such as Bob Marley, Ziggy Marley, and Damian Marley.
