Jake Shimabukuro was born in Honolulu, Hawaii, in 1976 to Japanese parents who were avid music fans. Jake began playing the ukulele at age four, inspired by his mother’s collection of Hawaiian music. He soon developed a passion for the instrument, and by age eleven he was good enough to perform with the Honolulu Symphony Orchestra.

Shimabukuro’s musical talent caught the attention of producer/songwriter Wayneco Wilson, who helped him get a recording contract with Epic Records Japan when he was eighteen years old. Shimabukuro’s self-titled debut album was released in 2001 and quickly became a best-seller in Japan. He has since released six more albums, including his most recent, “Grand Ukulele,” which topped Billboard’s World Music chart in 2012.

In addition to his success as a recording artist, Shimabukuro has also gained recognition for his innovative songwriting. His signature style blends traditional Hawaiian ukulele playing with jazz, blues, rock, and classical influences. Shimabukuro’s songs have been featured in movies and television shows such as “50 First Dates” and “Grey’s Anatomy.”
