The history of Gospel Music

Gospel music is a genre of Christian music. The creation, performance, significance, and even the definition of gospel music varies according to culture and social context. Gospel music is composed and performed for many purposes, including aesthetic pleasure, religious or ceremonial purposes, and as an entertainment product for the marketplace.

Gospel music usually has dominant vocals (often with strong use of harmony) with Christian lyrics. Gospel music can be traced to the early 17th century, with roots in the black oral tradition. Hymns and sacred songs were often repeated in a call and response fashion. Most of the churches relied on hand clapping and foot stomping as rhythmic accompaniment. Gospel music became popular outside of the African-American community in the late 19th century. White gospel music drew heavily on the musical traditions of both white Americans and African Americans.

The origins of gospel music are during American slavery, when slaves were forced to adopt the religion of their slave owners which was Christianity. Slaves were then able to sing about Jesus Christ and salvation which gave them hope. These songs were passed down orally until they were written down in 1876 by a group called The Fisk Jubilee Singers. Gospel music has been around for over 300 years and has evolved tremendously throughout that time. It is now one of the most popular genres of music with artists such as Kirk Franklin, Mahalia Jackson, Yolanda Adams, James Cleveland, Andrae Crouch, Reverend Milton Brunson and many others
