And with the recent opening of the Austin Classical Guitar Society, there’s even more reason to check out the classical music scene in Austin.

A Brief History of Classical Music in Austin

Classical music has been a part of Austin’s culture since the city’s founding in 1839. Austin was one of the first cities in Texas to have a professional orchestra, and the Austin Symphony Orchestra was founded in 1886. The Austin Civic Orchestra was also founded in 1886, making it one of the oldest continuously operating community orchestras in the country. The Austin Opera was founded in 1925, and the Austin Lyric Opera was founded in 1986.

The Austin Opera

The Austin Opera is one of the most important classical music organizations in the city. They are dedicated to presenting operatic and symphonic works of the highest quality, and to fostering a love and appreciation for classical music in the community.

The Opera has been a part of the city’s cultural fabric for over 50 years, and has presented some of the most beloved operas in history, including Carmen, La Bohème, and The Marriage of Figaro. Through its annual Summer Festival, educational programming, performances, and commissions, ACMC brings world-renowned chamber musicians to Austin to perform and teach, promoting chamber music as a living art form.

In addition to its annual Summer Festival, ACMC presents a Fall Series featuring intimate concerts in private homes, educational programs for children and adults, commissions of new works by contemporary composers, educational outreach programs for underserved audiences, and special events.

The Austin Classical Guitar Society

The Austin Classical Guitar Society (ACGS) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to the art of classical guitar. ACGS produces the enduringAustin Classical Guitar Festival and Competition, the largest and most prestigious event of its kind in North America, which attracts world-renowned guitarists from all over the globe. The Society also provides free guitar instruction to children in underserved schools throughout Central Texas and presents a full season of affordable concerts featuring internationally acclaimed artists, giving music lovers of all ages the opportunity to experience classical guitar up close and personal.

The Austin Bach Choir

The Austin Bach Choir is a choral group based in Austin, Texas. The group was founded in 2006 by Artistic Director Kenneth Bailey. The Choir has performed in a variety of venues, including the Long Center for the Performing Arts, the Bass Concert Hall, and the Blanton Museum of Art. The Choir has been featured on National Public Radio and has been recognized by the Texas State Legislature.
