The opera’s libretto was based on Sterbini’s own translation of the play, which itself was a adaptation of Pierre Augustin Caron de Beaumarchais’s original French play Le Barbier de Séville, or The Barber of Seville.

The opera tells the story of the ingenious Count Almaviva as he attempts to woo the beautiful Rosina away from her guardian, Dr. Bartolo, who plans to marry her himself. Along the way, Almaviva employs the help of Rosina’s singing teacher, Figaro – the titular barber – to carry out his plan.
