What is dubstep?

Dubstep is a genre of electronic dance music that originated in South London in the late 1990s. It is generally characterized by sparse, syncopated rhythmic patterns with bass lines that contain prominent sub-bass frequencies. The style emerged as an offshoot of UK garage, drawing on a lineage of related styles such as 2-step and dub reggae. In the United Kingdom, the earliest dubstep releases date back to 1998.

The genre dubstep was coined by Hatcha, a DJ and producer who worked at the Big Apple Records store in Croydon, South London. Hatcha’s early productions were released on the record label Tempa, which he co-founded with fellow DJ and producer Abbas Sadiqi (aka Skream). Dubstep quickly gained popularity in London nightclubs and soon began to appear on UK garage compilations and mix CDs.
