The Best Classical Music Composers of All Time

Johann Sebastian Bach

Johann Sebastian Bach was born in Eisenach, Germany, in 1685. Though he came from a family of musicians, Johann Sebastian Bach’s father intended for him to become a lawyer. However, after his father’s death in 1695, Bach enrolled at the St. Michael’s School at Luneburg. It was there that he first began to study music.

After finishing his schooling, Bach worked as a musician in several different cities, including Weimar, Arnstadt, and Mühlhausen. In 1707, he was appointed the court musician for Prince Leopold of Anhalt-Cöthen. It was during his time working for Prince Leopold that Bach composed some of his most well-known works, including the Brandenburg Concertos and the Goldberg Variations.

In 1717, Bach was appointed Kapellmeister (music director) at the court of Crown Prince Frederick of Prussia (later King Frederick II). During his time working for Frederick the Great, Bach composed many of his most famous works, including The Well-Tempered Clavier and the Mass in B Minor.

Bach is widely considered to be one of the greatest classical composers of all time. His works are celebrated for their technical mastery, musicality, and structure. Today, Bach’s music is performed all over the world by both professional and amateur musicians alike.

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart

One of the most enduringly popular of all classical composers, Austrian Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-91) created a string of operas, concertos, symphonies and sonatas that profoundly shaped classical music. His most famous works included the operas The Marriage of Figaro (1786), Così fan tutte (1790) and The Magic Flute (1791), as well as the Jupiter Symphony (1788), Eine kleine Nachtmusik (1787) and Turkish March piano Sonata No. 11 in A major (K. 331, 300i).

Ludwig van Beethoven

Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827) was a German composer and pianist, who is arguably the defining figure in the history of Western music.

Born in the city of Bonn in the Electorate of Cologne, Beethoven’s musical talent was evident at an early age. His father, Johann van Beethoven, was an abusive alcoholic, and Ludwig was subjected to a strict regime of musical training that included beatings when he did not progress satisfactorily. Despite this, he rose to become a prodigiously talented musician, and by his mid-twenties he was already gaining a reputation as an innovative composer.

Beethoven’s works span multiple genres and styles, from the youthful optimism of his early work to the heroic grandeur of his “middle period” compositions, and finally to the dark tragedy of his late period. He is best known for symphonies such as his Ninth Symphony, which features the famous “Ode to Joy” melody, as well as renowned piano sonatas such as the “Moonlight” Sonata and the “Waldstein” Sonata. In his final years Beethoven became increasingly deaf, but he continued to compose music of extraordinary power and emotion until his dying days.

Beethoven’s music exerts a profound influence on subsequent generations of composers and musicians, and he is widely considered to be one of the greatest classical composers of all time.

Frederic Chopin

Considered one of the Romantic era’s most pivotal composers, Fryderyk Chopin was born in Zelazowa Wola, Poland, in 1810. Though he only wrote a handful of concerti, his four ballades and 21 nocturnes are considered some of the pinnacles of 19th-century Romanticism. His works for piano solo—which make up the vast majority of his catalogue—are often regarded as technical masterpieces that require great artistic sensitivity, emotion and virtuosity. Among Chopin’s most popular pieces are “Revolutionary Étude,” “Fantaisie-Impromptu” and “Prelude in E Minor.” He died in Paris in 1849.

Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky

Considered by many to be the greatest composer of the Romantic era, Tchaikovsky’s ballet Swan Lake and his operas The Sleeping Beauty and Eugene Onegin are enduring classics. His first ballet, The Nutcracker, is still one of the most popular ballets today. Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 5 in E Minor and his Symphony No. 6 in B Minor (the Pathétique) are among the most recognizable pieces of classical music ever composed.
