About Kirk Franklin and the Family

Kirk Franklin and the Family was an American gospel music group, formed in 1993 by Kirk Franklin. The group’s lineup included mainstream R&B and pop performers who came together to record gospel music. The group found success with a number of hit songs, including “Stomp”, “Lean on Me”, “Something About the Name Jesus”, and “Why We Sing”.

In 2006, the group disbanded due to creative differences between Franklin and some of the other members. Despite this, the group remained active in recording and performing live, and released a number of successful albums over the next few years.

The group’s final album, Family Reunion, was released in 2013. It was met with positive reviews from critics, and featured the hit single “I Smile”. Shortly after its release, Kirk Franklin announced that he was leaving the group to focus on his solo career.

The group’s third album, Whatcha Lookin’ 4, was released on July 11, 1995. It peaked at number five on Billboard’s Top Gospel Albums chart and spent102 weeks on the chart.

The group’s fourth album, God’s Property from Kirk Franklin’s Nu Nation, was released on September 2, 1997. It peaked at number two on Billboard’s Top Gospel Albums chart and spent50 weeks on the chart. The album won a Grammy Award for Best Contempory Soul Gospel Album at the 40th Annual Grammy Awards.

The group’s fifth album, The Rebirth of Kirk Franklin, was released on April 6, 2002. It debuted at number one on Billboard’s Top Gospel Albums chart and stayed there for eight consecutive weeks. It also debuted at number one on theBillboard 200 albums chart making it the first gospel album to do so since 1980.
