What is dubstep?

Dubstep is a genre of electronic dance music that originated in South London in the late 1990s. It is generally characterized by sparse, syncopated rhythmic patterns with bass lines that contain prominent sub-bass frequencies. The style emerged as an offshoot of UK garage, drawing on a lineage of related styles such as 2-step and dub reggae. In the United Kingdom, the origins of the genre can be traced back to productions by artists such as Oris Jay, Steve Gurley, Zed Bias and El-B in the late 1990s.

The term “dubstep” in reference to a genre of music began to be used by around 2002 by labels such as Big Apple, Ammunition, and Tempa, by which time stylistic trends used in creating these remixes started to become more noticeable and better defined.

The history of dubstep

The history of dubstep is often told through the lenses of two very different groups of people: the original dubstep producers from South London in the early 2000s, and the American EDM producers who popularized the sound in the 2010s.

The original dubstep producers were a tight-knit group of friends and collaborators who all came up together in South London in the early 2000s. The most important figure in this group was undoubtedly Skream, whose groundbreaking 2006 album Skream! is considered by many to be the first true dubstep album. Other key members of this group include Benga, Dizzee Rascal, and Burial.

The sound that these producers created was a dark and atmospheric style of electronic music that was heavily influenced by 2-step garage and grime. The key elements of dubstep are sub-bass wobble basslines, syncopated drum patterns, and dark, atmospheric textures.

In the 2010s, dubstep was popularized by American EDM producers such as Skrillex, Bassnectar, and Pretty Lights. These producers took the basic elements of dubstep and combined them with other genres such as house, techno, and trap to create a new hybrid style of electronic music. This style of dubstep is often characterized by heavy bass drops and energetic build-ups/breaks.
