Heavy metal music is a genre of rock music that developed in the late 1960s and early 1970s, largely in the United Kingdom and the United States. With roots in blues rock and psychedelic rock, the bands that created heavy metal developed a thick, massive sound, characterized by highly amplified distortion, extended guitar solos, emphatic beats, and overall loudness. The genre’s lyrics and performance styles are sometimes associated with aggression and machismo.

In 1970, several British rock bands, including Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath and Deep Purple, adapted blues rock to create a new genre that incorporated elements of hard rock and created a sound heavier than what had come before. Though often seen as less virtuosic and more formulaic than other genres from the same era, heavy metal took on a life of its own with dynamic performers like Van Halen and Iron Maiden. The genre matured in the 1980s with albums such as Metallica’s Master of Puppets (1986) and Slayer’s Reign in Blood (1986), becoming faster, more aggressive, and more technically demanding.

Today’s heavy metal bands owe much to their forebears; they continue to churn out thunderous rhythms and ear-splitting solos while exploring new territory both lyrically and musically. If you’re a fan of this hard-hitting sound, check out our list of the best heavy metal bands of all time.

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Heavy metal is a subgenre of rock music that developed in the late 1960s and early 1970s. It has its roots in hard rock and blues rock, and is sometimes associated with psychedelic rock[1][2][3] and early proto-metal. It is typified by a heavy use of distorted electric guitars, bass guitar, drums, and often accompanied with pianos and keyboards.

Classic heavy metal bands developed a thick, powerful sound, characterized by highly amplified distortion, extended guitar solos, emphatic beats, and overall loudness. Heavy metal lyrics may deal with social issues such as politics[4][5], religion,[6][7] or personal topics such as relationships,[8] love,[9] sex,[10] or crime.[11]

The term “heavy metal” has been used interchangeably with “hard rock” since the 1970s,[12][13][14][15] but it refers to a specific musical style characterized by a massive sound,[16][17][18] characterized by highly amplified distortion and extended guitar solos.

A handful of early2000s[19] reports on the resurgence of heavy metal noted that some young heavy metal fans had distanced themselves from the genre’s stereotypes and image problems,[20][21] while others had embraced them.[22][23]

From Black Sabbath to Metallica, Judas Priest to Slayer, here is our list of the 100 greatest metal albums of all time

As the son of a preacher man, Ozzy Osbourne was not supposed to become the Prince of Darkness. But when he formed Black Sabbath in 1968 with Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler and Bill Ward, he found his true calling. The Birmingham band’s self-titled debut LP, released in early 1970, kicks off with the creepy classic “Black Sabbath” and sets the tone for an album that would go on to be hailed as one of the most influential metal albums of all time. With Iommi’s slow, heavy riffs and Osbourne’s eerie vocals, Sabbath created a dark, menacing sound that would ultimately give birth to an entire genre.

Released in September 1991, Metallica’s self-titled fifth album – aka “The Black Album” – signalled a major change in direction for the San Francisco metal band. Produced by Bob Rock, it was their first LP without longtime bassist Cliff Burton who had died in a bus accident just prior to its recording. While their previous four albums had been progressive and complex affairs focused on speed and aggression, The Black Album was more restrained and song-oriented. It also featured a newfound sense of maturity – both musically and lyrically – with tracks like “Enter Sandman”, “Sad but True” and “The Unforgiven” becoming radio staples and cementing Metallica’s status as one of the world’s biggest rock bands.

Judas Priest were already well-established as one of Britain’s premier heavy metal outfits when they released their fifth album British Steel in 1980. But it was this record – which featured such now-classic tracks as “Breaking the Law”, “Living After Midnight” and “Metal Gods” – that truly cemented their reputation as pioneers of the genre. With its simple yet effective songs and dual guitar assault courtesy of Glenn Tipton and K.K. Downing, British Steel perfectly captured the raw energy and excitement of heavy metal at its finest. It would go on to influence countless other metal bands in the years that followed and remains one of Judas Priest’s most essential releases.

Slayer will forever be associated with Reign in Blood, an unrelenting 28-minute assault that stands as one of thrash metal’s all-time great achievement sin 1986. Produced by Rick Rubin, it features some of Slayer’s most brutal material ever committed to tape including “Alter Bridge”, “Raining Blood”and “Angel Of Death”. While Slayer had always been a fast, aggressive band up until this point, Reign in Blood took things to a whole new level – both sonicallyand lyrically – cementing their reputation as extreme metal innovators in the process.
