The Billboard Latin Music Awards are given out annually to honor the best and brightest in Latin music. This year, the award for Artist of the Year went to Bad Bunny.

Introduction

The Billboard Latin Music Award for Artist of the Year is given annually by Billboard magazine. The award recognizes the most successful Latin artists of the year, as determined by album sales, radio airplay, touring, and social media engagement.

The Artist of the Year award was first presented in 1995, and has been given out annually since then. In 2013, the award was renamed to the “Artist of the Year” award.

The nominees for the award are selected by a panel of Latin music experts, and the winner is chosen based on album sales, radio airplay, touring, and social media engagement.

History of the award

The Billboard Latin Music Award for Artist of the Year is an award that has been given out since 1987. The award is given to the Latin artist who has had the most success on the Billboard charts during the eligibility period.

First award show

The Billboard Latin Music Awards were created to recognize the most popular albums, songs, and performers in Latin music, as determined by Billboard magazine. The award show began in 1994, and was held annually until 2006. In 2007, the award show returned after a one-year hiatus. The award show has been held every year since then.

The award show is typically held in April or May. It is usually held in Miami, but has also been held in Los Angeles and Las Vegas.

The award show features musical performances by Latin artists, as well as awards for the best-selling Latin albums and songs of the year.

Second award show

The Billboard Latin Music Awards is an annual awards show which honors the most influential Latin artists of the year. The award show was first held in 1994 and was known as the American Music Awards of Latin Origin until 2005, when it was renamed the “Latin Billboard Awards”. In 2006, the award show was renamed again to its current title.

The award show is broadcast live on television in the United States and Puerto Rico. The ceremony is also broadcast live online via Yahoo! Latino.

Winners are selected by Billboard magazine based on sales figures, airplay, streaming activity, and other criteria.

Third award show and beyond

In 1996, the show was telecast for the first time in the United States on the Univision television network. That same year, the award for “Best New Artist” was changed to “Best New Artist of the Year”. From 1997 onwards, the show has been held at various venues across the United States. The following year, the show shifted from a May to a April air date to avoid overlaps with the MTV Video Music Awards. In 1999, due to scheduling conflicts with the All-Star Game (which had occasionally coincided with Latin Week in previous years), as well as an unavailability of top-tier Latin acts willing and able to attend on such short notice, Billboard cancelled that year’s show altogether.

In 2000 and 2001, the ceremonies were again held at Madison Square Garden. In 2002 and 2003, they returned to Miami Beach; in 2004, they were held at Houston’s Toyota Center; in 2005–2007, they took place at American Airlines Arena in Miami; and from 2008 to 2011 (and again in 2013), they were held at Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas. On 2006 results were announced live for the first time on national television via ABC – which marked the beginning of a new partnership between Billboard and ABC that would last until 2009. For its 10th anniversary special telecast on Univision in 2009, Billboard delivered its most-watched annual awards show ever – averaging 4 million viewers during primetime – thereby becoming one of only four award shows this decade whose ratings increased over its previous anniversary telecast (joining Oscars®, Golden Globes® and Academy of Country Music Awards®).

In 2010, The festivities returned back home to Miami where it took place at the Arena at University of Miami with Shakira being honored as Latin Recording Academy Person of the Year that night. Last year’s show attracted 6.6 million viewers – ranking as one of most-watched annual entertainment specials on all English & Spanish language networks since 2010 – with Jason Derulo and Gente de Zona being honored as Top Latin Artist & Top Latin Album artists respectively and Ricky Martin as Platinum Award honoree for his enduring career achievements & influence within music industry worldwide.
