Introduction

The Billboard Latin Music Award for Tropical Song of the Year is an award presented annually by Billboard magazine. The award is given to honor the best new tropical Latin songs, defined as “a song with lyrics in Spanish or Portuguese, played in a tropical melody and with a rhythm that brings to mind Afro-Cuban, Brazilian or Caribbean styles.”

In 2012, the award was first presented as part of the Billboard Latin Music Awards. The inaugural winner was “No Te Vayas” by Jorge Drexler. In 2013, the award was not given out.

In 2014, the award was renamed the “Billboard Latin Music Award for Tropical Song of the Year”, and the first recipient under the new name was “6 AM” by J Balvin featuring Farruko.

History

Origins

The Billboard Latin Music Awards were established to recognize the most popular albums, songs, and performers in Latin music, as determined by Billboard magazine. They began as the Latin Pop Awards in 1994 and were known as the Latin Grammy Awards until 2005, when they underwent a name change due to a legal dispute with the Recording Academy over use of the name “Grammy”. The awards are broadcast annually on Telemundo.

The award for Tropical Song of the Year was first presented in 1994 as part of the Latin Pop Awards. It was awarded to either a pop or tropical song, but in 1999, it was split into two separate awards, one for pop songs and one for tropical songs. In 2012, the award was once again combined into one award.

Present day

In 2010, Bryant Myers won the award for “TĂș No Eres de Na” making him the first and only artist to win the award for a Spanish-language song. In 2013, Gente de Zona won the award for “Bailando”, making them the first Cuban artists to win the award. In 2014, Romeo Santos won the award for “Odio”.

Criteria

The Billboard Latin Music Award for Tropical Song of the Year is an award that is presented annually by Billboard magazine. The award recognizes the best-performing tropical song of the year in the United States, as determined by Billboard’s Latin music charts.

Eligibility

To be eligible for this award, a song must:
-Have been commercially released during the eligibility period.
-Be performed primarily in Spanish or Portuguese.
-Contain at least 51% of its content in Spanish or Portuguese.

Voting process

The Billboard Latin Music Award for Tropical Song of the Year is conferred to the song with the highest number of votes, as determined by online and traditional radio listeners. The criteria for eligibility is that the song must have been released within a 12-month period, and must have achieved at least a top 20 position on the Billboard Tropical Songs chart.
