What is Black Gospel Music?

Black Gospel Music is a genre of music that is based on the Christian gospel, but it has been uniquely influenced by the sounds and culture of African American (Black) communities in the United States. This type of music often features choirs or solo performers singing about their faith in a call and response format. Black Gospel Music has its roots in the late 19th century, when groups such as The Fisk Jubilee Singers and The Dixie Hummingbirds began to popularize spirituals, hymns, and negro spirituals. In the 20th century, artists such as Mahalia Jackson, James Cleveland, and The Clark Sisters helped to further the genre with their soulful and powerful voices. Black Gospel Music has continued to evolve in the 21st century, with artists like Kirk Franklin and Travis Greene leading the way.
