The Beatles

The Beatles were a British rock band that formed in Liverpool in 1960. The group consisted of John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr. They became widely regarded as the foremost and most influential music band in history. Rooted in skiffle and 1950s rock and roll, the Beatles later experimented with several genres, ranging from pop ballads to psychedelic and hard rock, often incorporating classical elements in innovative ways. In 1963, their enormous popularity first emerged as “Beatlemania”; as the group’s music grew in sophistication, led by primary songwriters Lennon and McCartney, they came to be perceived as an embodiment of the ideals shared by the counterculture of the 1960s.

The Beatles built their reputation playing clubs in Liverpool and Hamburg over a three-year period from 1960, with Stuart Sutcliffe initially serving as bass player. The core trio of Lennon, McCartney, and Harrison, together since 1958, went through a succession of drummers during this period; Pete Best was the last drummer for the official line-up. By early 1962 they had returned to playing small clubs (one notable engagement was at the Star-Club in Hamburg), as well as some radio and television appearances; Brian Epstein took over as their manager late that year.

The Rolling Stones

The Rolling Stones are an English rock band formed in London, England, in 1962. The first stable line-up consisted of Brian Jones (guitar, harmonica), Mick Jagger (lead vocals, harmonica), Keith Richards (guitar, vocals), Bill Wyman (bass), Charlie Watts (drums), and Ian Stewart (piano). Stewart was removed from the official line-up in 1963 but continued as a touring member until his death in 1985. Jones died less than a month after Stewart, having already been replaced by Mick Taylor who remained until 1974. After Taylor’s departure, Ronnie Wood took his place in 1975 and continues on guitar in tandem with Richards. Following Wyman’s retirement in 1993, Darryl Jones joined as their touring bassist. Other touring keyboardists for the band have been Nicky Hopkins (1967–1982), Billy Preston (1971–1981), Ian McLagan (1978–1981), Chuck Leavell (1982–present) and Ben Palmer (2002–present).

The Stones were at the forefront of the British Invasion of bands that became popular in the United States in 1964. Many of their hits were written by Jagger and Richards and they are considered one of the most influential rock bands of all time. They have released 30 studio albums, 23 live albums and numerous compilations. Let It Bleed was their first album to be certified gold in the US; 11 more would follow, including seven consecutive number one studio albums between 1971 and 1977 – an achievement only bested by The Beatles. Sticky Fingers and Some Girls are generally seen as their best albums while Tumbling Dice has been called their greatest hit single ever by many critics such as Richie Unterberger from AllMusic and Dan Cairns from The Sunday Times,. Estimated sales are above 250 million units worldwide for all albums released before 2016; sales for Their Satanic Majesties Request stands at 6 million copies according to Nielsen SoundScan since 1991 when records were first tracked electronically
