What is the Blues Alley Music Society?

The Blues Alley Music Society is a non-profit organization dedicated to the preservation and promotion of blues and jazz music. They offer a variety of concerts and events throughout the year, featuring some of the world’s leading musicians. Membership is open to everyone, and there are no age restrictions.

A brief history of the organization

The Blues Alley Music Society is a 501(c)(3) non-profit arts organization committed to the promotion and preservation of jazz and blues music. They do this through live performances, educational programs, and community outreach initiatives.

The Society was founded in 1985 by two jazz enthusiasts, Bob Kirkpatrick and Frank Hoyt Taylor. Their goal was to create a musical environment that would foster appreciation and understanding of jazz and blues music among people of all ages. They began by hosting monthly concerts at the historic Blues Alley nightclub in Washington, D.C., featuring some of the biggest names in the genre.

As the Society’s reputation grew, so did its membership. Today, the Society has over 1,000 members and continues to host monthly concerts at Blues Alley, as well as other venues throughout the Washington, D.C. area. The Society also provides educational programming for children and adults, including workshops, clinics, and master classes led by world-renowned musicians. In addition, the Society offers scholarships to talented young musicians pursuing careers in jazz and blues music.

What the Blues Alley Music Society does for the music community

The Blues Alley Music Society (BAMS) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit musical arts organization, dedicated to the preservation and advancement of American music through live performance, educational programs, and support of American musicians and composers.

Since its inception in 2001, BAMS has produced over 1,000 concerts featuring some of the most celebrated names in American music, including: B.B. King, Tony Bennett, Aerosmith, Patti LaBelle, Gladys Knight, Lionel Richie, Smokey Robinson, Willie Nelson, Jerry Lee Lewis, Bill Cosby, Crosby & Nash and many others. In addition to large benefit concerts featuring top musical talent, BAMS also produces over 100 free educational concerts and clinics each year for more than 15,000 school children in the Washington DC metro area.

BAMS supports American musicians and composers through its annual grants program. To date BAMS has awarded more than $350,000 in grants to individuals and organizations working to preserve and advance American music.
