Introduction
The blues is a genre of music that originated in the African-American communities in the United States around the end of the 19th century. The style is characterized by blue notes, improvisation, and a call-and-response format. The first recorded use of the term “blue notes” was in 1916 by journalist Ma Rainey.
The popularity of blues music grew rapidly in the 1920s and 1930s with the rise of jazz and swing. In the 1940s and 1950s, artists such as Muddy Waters, Howlin’ Wolf, and John Lee Hooker helped to popularize electric blues. In the 1960s and 1970s, blues rock bands such as Cream, The Jimi Hendrix Experience, Led Zeppelin, and The Rolling Stones popularized a harder sound. In the 1980s and 1990s, artists such as Stevie Ray Vaughan, Buddy Guy, Robert Cray, and Eric Clapton helped to reintroduce an element of improvisation back into the genre.
