On Friday, the festival kicked off with a bang thanks to headlining act Buddy Guy. The legendary guitarist put on an incredible show, wowing the crowd with his signature style of blues. Also on Friday, John Lee Hooker Jr. brought his own brand of blues to the stage, and Lee Fields & The Expressions had everyone dancing with their soulful sound.

Saturday was another great day of music, starting with a set by Grammy-nominated artist Shemekia Copeland. Later in the day, Mavis Staples had everyone on their feet with her uplifting performance, and William Bell wrapped things up with a heart-wrenching set that left the crowd wanting more.

The Best of the 2015 Blues Music Festival – Part 2

The 2015 Chicago Blues Festival was quite a event, with three days of great music on six stages. If you missed it, or if you want to relive it, here are some highlights from the festival.

On Friday, the festival kicked off with a bang, featuring excellent sets from John Németh, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, and Shemekia Copeland. Németh played a high-energy set of original songs and well-chosen covers, while Shepherd brought his trademark guitar virtuosity to an set of blues standards. Copeland lived up to her reputation as a powerhouse vocalist, wowing the crowd with her soulful singing.

Saturday featured sets from many artists, including Jarekus Singleton, Tedschi Trucks Band, Irma Thomas, and Buddy Guy. Singleton impressed with his thoughtful songwriting and skilled guitar playing, while the Trucks Band won over the crowd with their spirited performance. Thomas was in fine form, singing classics like “Time Is on My Side” and “Wish Someone Would Care”. As always, Buddy Guy closed out the night with a set of searing blues guitar playing that had the crowd on its feet.

The festival concluded on Sunday with sets from Billy Branch & The Sons of Blues, Toronzo Canon, Mavis Staples, and B.B. King’s protégé Hiram Bullock. Branch & The Sons of Blues played a fierce set of electric blues that got the crowd moving. Canon thrilled with his impassioned songs about life in Chicago’s south side. Staples brought her legendary vocals to bear on a set of both classic gospel tunes and more modern material. And Bullock brought the festival to a close with a heartfelt tribute to his mentor B.B. King.

One of the standout performances of the day was from veteran bluesman Buddy Guy. Guy has been performing for over 50 years, and his set at the festival showed that he’s still got it. He performed a mixture of blues classics and newer songs, and had the crowd on their feet throughout his performance.

Another great performance from the final day came from relative newcomers The Rides. The band is fronted by two veteran musicians – Stephen Stills and Kenny Wayne Shepherd – and they put on an amazing show.
