The Fillmore

Location

The Fillmore is located in the Western Addition district of San Francisco, California, in the United States. Originally named the Majestic Hall and later the Fillmore Auditorium, it was built in 1912. It has been known by its present name since 1945. The street address is 1805 Geary Boulevard.

The Fillmore was established by Charles Chaplin, who also owned several movie theaters in the San Francisco area including the Puritan and the Electric. He was inspired by music halls he had seen in London and decided to build his own in San Francisco. The Fillmore opened on January 31, 1912, with a capacity of 1,500 people. It featured vaudeville acts and live bands playing blues and jazz music.

In 1926, Chaplin sold the Fillmore to a group of investors led by Joshua Cosden, who operated it as a venue for live music and dance. Cosden management increased capacity to 2,700 people and began booking nationally-known acts such as Duke Ellington and Count Basie. In 1949, Bill Graham leased the auditorium and began promoting concerts by artists such as Miles Davis and Sarah Vaughan. He eventually took over ownership of the venue, which he operated until his death in 1991.
