The name “Birchmere” derives from the former roadside restaurant (est. 1947) that Boyle and Harrison purchased in 1966 to house their new music venue. A small stage was added to the restaurant for live performances; when the restaurant failed shortly thereafter, Harrison and Boyle converted it into a music hall. The first show at the Birchmere was two local bands, Mose Allison and Ted Harris & The Nighthawks; both were blues bands.
