It has been running continuously on Broadway since October 30 , 1997 ,making it currently (as of 2019 )the sixth-longest running show in history . On September 22 , 2019 ,it was announced that The Lion King would become one of only eleven musicals to have run for over twenty years on Broadway , alongside shows such as Cats , Les Misérables , The Phantom of the Opera ,and Chicago .

The success of the original Broadway production led to several subsequent productions around the world . Between 2002 and 2019 there have been nineteen separate productions worldwide: five permanent shows running concurrently across three continents (North America , Europe ,and Oceania ), four North American national tours that have visited over fifty cities across the continent between them; a two-part stage production in Japan ; a Mexican production that toured Latin American countries between 2006 and 2008 ;a South African tour between 2007 and 2009 ;a Russian version that toured Europe between 2009 and 2011 ;an Australian tour which visited New Zealand in 2011–2012 ;two North American touring productions between 2011 and 2014 ;and two UK / Ireland tours between 2013 and 2016
