Jazz is a style of music that originated in the United States in the early 20th century. It is characterized by swing and blue notes, call and response vocals, polyrhythms and improvisation. Jazz has been called “America’s classical music”.

Since the 1920s Jazz Age, jazz has become recognized as a major form of musical expression. It then emerged in the form of independent traditional and popular musical styles, all linked by the common bonds of African-American and European-American musical parentage with a performance orientation. Jazz is characterized by swing and blue notes, call and response vocals, polyrhythms and improvisation.

Jazz has roots in West African cultural and musical expression, and in African-American music traditions including blues and ragtime. Jazz evolved out of the jubilee singing tradition[6] of the late 19th century black population on plantations in the Deep South.[7][8] Its immediate predecessors were the jump bluesHells[9]and stride piano styles representatives like Thomas “Fats” Waller,[10]Duke Ellington,[11]and Jelly Roll Morton.[12] American historian Lawrence Levine suggests that it is impossible to bind jazz to a single geographical region,[13] stating that it “spans a range of territory from New Orleans to Kansas City.”[14]

In jazz, one often improvises an accompaniment based on the basic framework provided by a chord progression; while creating improvised melodies (leads) above this accompaniment.[15][16][17] In contrast to 20th century Western art music,[18][19]Jazz chords are typically played with seventh chords or dominant ninth chords,[20][21 ][22 ]and extended harmonizations using upper structure triads or tetrads.[23][24 ]Nearly all jazz band instruments have been electrified since famous big bands were founded during the Swing Era in the 1930s–1940s widely associated with bandleaders such as Benny Goodman (clarinet), Glenn Miller (trombone) and Count Basie (piano).[25 ][26 ][27 ]

During the early 20th century prior to World War I African Americans were employed primarily as laborers across most parts of America particularly within rural agricultural southern plantations—the primary source for their labor being sharecropping which resulted from emancipation after slavery was outlawed.
