What is Bristol Funk?

Bristol funk is a distinct style of funk music that developed in Bristol, England in the late 1970s and early 1980s. The sound is characterized by heavy basslines, syncopated rhythms, and often unconventional percussion. Bristol funk also frequently incorporates elements of dub reggae and electronic music.

The Bristol funk scene was highly influential in the development of the UK garage and drum and bass genres, both of which emerged in the 1990s. Bristol funk is also sometimes referred to as “Bristol sound”, “Bristol style”, or simply “funk”.

Bristol funk began to gain popularity in the late 1970s with the rise of disco and punk rock. Venues such as The Dugout, located in the St Paul’s area of Bristol, provided a space for black and white youths to come together and dance to music that they otherwise would not have had access to. The Dugout became known for its eclectic mix of music, which included soul, reggae, dub, disco, and funk.

The popularity of Bristol funk continued to grow in the 1980s with the release of several notable records including “Funkin’ for Jamaica” by Tom Browne (1981), “Rapture” by Blondie (1981), and “Doin’ It To Death” by James Brown (1973). In 1982, DJ Barry Brown released his album Funkin’ Around Bristol, which helped to further popularize the genre.

In the 1990s, Bristol funk evolved into UK garage and drum and bass. This evolution was largely due to the influence of jungle music, which began to gain popularity in Brixton, London in the early 1990s. Jungle music was itself a fusion of Jamaican Ragga/Dub/Reggae with American Hip Hop/R&B/Funk/Soul. Many key figures in the UK garage and drum and bass scenes got their start DJing or producing jungle music in Brixton before moving to Bristol to further develop their sound.

Today, Bristol funk continues to influence new genres of electronic music as producers experiment with incorporating its unique sounds into their own work.
